  • Having a personal brand at work is key for introverts, expert says: ‘A lot of people underestimate’ them

Today, she has over 100,000 followers on LinkedIn, and that platform has helped her land new roles, obtain a book deal and share her expert advice as a Forbes contributor. Having a personal brand at work is key for introverts, expert says: ‘A lot of people underestimate’ them Goldie Chan knows how to put herself out there. Chan, the founder and head of content for branding agency Warm Robots, is also an author, a frequent keynote speaker and a LinkedIn Top Voice. Still, she describes herself as an introvert at heart — which presented a challenge in growing her career. “I think a lot of people underestimate introverts in the workplace,” she says. According to Chan, building a personal brand was key to her success. Earlier in her career, Chan worked “completely behind the scenes” in various marketing and social media roles, she says. In 2017, she began posting short videos about pop culture branding and marketing on LinkedIn, which was beta-testing its video feature at the time. Becoming a content creator wasn’t initially her plan: “I really thought, I’m just going to do this until I get my next full-time job,” Chan recalls. While in between roles, she posted over 800 consecutive daily videos — a pace she doesn’t necessarily recommend “unless you never want to sleep again” — and quickly attracted a large audience. Today, she has over 100,000 followers on LinkedIn, and that platform has helped her land new roles, obtain a book deal and share her expert advice as a Forbes contributor. “I grew my own personal brand through a lot of consistency and hard work,” she says. Chan writes about how introverts can level up their careers in her upcoming book “Personal Branding for Introverts,” which debuts in October. How introverts can master personal branding Whether you know it or not, “everyone has a personal brand,” Chan says. If the idea of a personal brand sounds intimidating, just think of it as “something in your career that people know you for,” whether that’s your penchant for public speaking , affinity for colorful blazers or your humorous LinkedIn posts. Developing a strong personal brand can help introverts bring their talents to the forefront and boost their careers, she says: “It allows you to shape the story that other people are telling about you.” Still sound scary? Chan hears that a lot. “I’ve had so many introverts who have come up to me and said, ‘I’m so terrified of growing my personal brand because I don’t want to put myself out there,’” she says. Chan herself used to feel the same way. To combat her social anxiety , she challenged herself to speak with a new person at her local coffee shop each day for a month. Just one small, consistent action can help you break out of your comfort zone, she says. If you’re nervous about reaching out to professional connections, commit to sending one networking email a month, Chan says. Trying to grow an online presence? Post one update a week. “The more you do it regularly, the easier it is to keep going,” she says. Keep in mind that your personal brand doesn’t just exist online. According to Chan, participating in social events like hobby groups or networking meetups can also contribute to building your brand. Your unique interests help set you apart, she says, and you might be surprised at the opportunities that arise. “A personal brand is never created in isolation,” Chan says. “Being involved in groups that interest you, even if they’re not directly related to your career, can actually help with your career.” She describes personal brands as the “hub in the center of spokes.” “All these different spokes are all the different things that you do, and they all connect back to a central hub — so whatever small things you do are always going to help your overall personal brand,” she says. In this engaging conversation, Goldie Chan, a brand and storytelling expert, discusses the nuances of introversion, personal branding, and the dynamics between introverts and extroverts. Goldie Chan: Personal Branding for Introverts In this engaging conversation, Goldie Chan, a brand and storytelling expert, discusses the nuances of introversion, personal branding, and the dynamics between introverts and extroverts. She shares insights from her new book, ‘Personal Branding for Introverts,’ and emphasizes the importance of networking, small talk, and setting expectations in professional environments. Goldie also draws parallels between historical figures like Cleopatra and modern branding strategies, while encouraging listeners to embrace their unique identities and take risks in their careers. I’ve noticed that the younger generation doesn’t like it when you call them on the phone out of the blue – but is that maybe an introvert thing? “So, I think it is both introversion and generational because there’s also members of the older generation that don’t like phone calls, right? And I think that that is introversion, but I do agree with you that for the younger generation – I’m part of the millennial generation – for millennial and younger, the rule of thumb is text first; and then get approval to call; and then call. And also definitely don’t do Facebook audio or Facebook voice. I have been assaulted by those things before, and I don’t appreciate getting the Facebook call or the Facebook video. Just personally as both an introvert and someone of the millennial generation, I would rather get personally a text beforehand.” There is an irony in the fact that you are an introvert and here you are on a podcast and you’re probably going to be talking to a ton of people to help sell this book. “I think that this is so funny because I’m an introvert. I’m truly an introvert trying to sell a book about introverts to other introverts. And if you ask me what the magic bullet is, I, I truly do not know. But as somebody who’s not a sales pro, I have to say that it’s a numbers game I’m realizing. I think the more people that you reach, the higher your chances are of selling something.” You delve into the spectrum of introversion which can include introverts who are kind of loud. “I wanted to specifically write a book that did not have the word quiet in the title. I didn’t want to say that the only kinds of introverts that exist are quiet, because I think that we so often minimize all introverts to one characteristic of quiet. And then also maybe crying in the corner, which I’ll do later, so you know – it’s probably pretty accurate. I could do an entire book on this and that’s the loud introvert. I think that so many introverts get really loud and passionate and excited when they’re talking about something that they care about. And I’m sure you’ve seen this too, when you’ve seen introverts that you’ve worked with, especially young introverts, when they finally have a voice.” Photo Credit: Mercedes Zapata Visit Website

  • Personal Branding For Introverts: Thoughtful, Not Loud

Goldie Chan, often dubbed the “green-haired Oprah of LinkedIn,” has built a thriving career by proving that quiet confidence can be one of the most powerful branding tools of all. Personal Branding For Introverts: Thoughtful, Not Loud In a world that often celebrates extroversion—where being loud, visible, and “always on” can seem like the only path to success—introverts may wonder how they can stand out without feeling drained or inauthentic. Goldie Chan, often dubbed the “green-haired Oprah of LinkedIn,” has built a thriving career by proving that quiet confidence can be one of the most powerful branding tools of all. Author of Personal Branding for Introverts , Chan brings a thoughtful, strategic approach to visibility. With more than 800 consecutive videos created for LinkedIn, she’s become a respected voice for profe ssionals who prefer depth over noise. Her message? You don’t have to change your nature to make a meaningful impact—you just have to know how to tell your story. “As an introvert myself,” Chan says, “I define personal branding as the ability to show up in the room and quickly share who I am and what I stand for through the lens of storytelling. I have no interest in pretending to be an extrovert. Instead, I focus on the foundation of my brand which is clear writing, telling great stories, and creating content that gives me enough pause to know what I'm going to say before I even share it.” That reflective approach, she says, is one of the introvert’s greatest advantages. “Introverts are such natural deep thinkers that they do well when they reflect before they act. I think this enables them to be deliberate in their brand messaging and also deeply aligned with whatever their internal values may be.” That thoughtfulness, she adds, “can translate into a wonderful brand voice that feels consistent, clear, and very well considered—all qualities that audiences and potential clients naturally gravitate toward.” Busting Myths About Introverts One of the biggest misconceptions Chan encounters is that introverts “can never be loud.” She’s quick to dismiss that. “Introverts absolutely can be loud and deeply passionate about what they care about, and they can express this both verbally and privately in their communities.” Another mistaken belief? That introverts can’t network effectively. “Introverts really do excel at building deep, one-on-one relationships that can lead to long-term opportunities and surprising doors opening.” The First Step: Start With One For introverts ready to take a first step toward building their personal brand, Chan recommends simplicity. “I always say start with one. This can mean starting with one audience demographic or one platform.” She suggests thinking about audiences in three tiers: “The middle tier is your peers—your previous or past colleagues. The top tier is your bosses, clients, or board of directors. The bottom tier is the general audience.” Choosing one demographic first, she says, helps clarify both message and strategy. Storytelling With Purpose Storytelling, a core element of Chan’s work, doesn’t have to feel like oversharing. “Introverts can effectively leverage storytelling by connecting back to the listeners’ needs,” she says. “Try filtering your storytelling by asking, What part of this experience will resonate best with my audience? ” Focus, she suggests, on takeaways—“a great mindset shift, a truly practical tip, or a cautionary example of what didn’t work for you.” The result? Stories that “feel purposeful instead of selfish or self-indulgent.” Networking, the Quiet Way When it comes to networking, Chan champions the small and intentional. “I’m a big fan of the small and intentional in-person gathering,” she says. “By hosting anything from a round table, a book club, or an in-person coffee chat at your local favorite café or venue, you’re intentionally creating smaller curated shared interest events.” For introverts, these “less draining” settings make authentic connection feel natural—and sustainable. Visibility Without the Noise As a long-time presence on LinkedIn, Chan knows how to maintain visibility in ways that feel genuine. “I begin by focusing on engagement that happens through depth and not volume,” she explains. “Being visible in a positive way is not only about posting, it's about engaging by asking meaningful questions, doing thoughtful commenting, and connecting one-on-one through DMs. These quieter forms of engagement can be just as or even more powerful than going viral.” Her trademark green hair—originally just a personal choice—evolved into a key visual identifier. “When I started creating videos on LinkedIn, I had tennis ball green hair,” she recalls. As her audience grew, “they began to use the green heart emoji to represent me.” Eventually, that signature look and her warm, interview-based content earned her the “Oprah of LinkedIn” title from Huffington Post. Reinvention and Consistency Career changes, Chan says, are natural opportunities to refine a personal brand. “A truly strong personal brand will emphasize what remains constant,” she notes. “Your core values, your strengths and transferable work skills will tie your old role to your new work path.” Whether moving from corporate leadership to entrepreneurship or changing industries, “you’re ultimately highlighting transferable skills and core values that bring your credibility and expertise to the forefront.” Defining and Measuring Success Success, in Chan’s view, isn’t about follower counts—it’s about alignment. “One of the clearest measures of success is whether the way others know you matches the way you want to be known.” Her exercise called “ideal daydreaming” helps clients imagine their perfect work-life day to ensure their brand supports the life they actually want. Tools for Thoughtful Branding For introverts, she recommends starting with LinkedIn. “It rewards depth and clarity over constant noise,” Chan says. “Instead of the need to post daily, introverts can now share well-crafted articles or videos, reflective posts, or even thoughtful comments that showcase their direct expertise.” She also suggests visual storytelling tools such as Adobe Express to create “professional graphics, mood boards, and branded templates” that communicate personality without constant self-promotion. In the end, Goldie Chan’s message is both empowering and practical: introversion isn’t a barrier to visibility—it’s a different route to it. As she puts it, introverted entrepreneurs and professionals “can excel by going deep instead of focusing broadly.” In a noisy world, that depth just might be the quiet superpower that makes all the difference.

  • Meet Goldie Chan

We were lucky to catch up with Goldie Chan recently and have shared our conversation Meet Goldie Chan Goldie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room? I often find myself as the only one who looks like me in the room – the first Asian American or POC speaker (that is also a woman and under 50) on stage or in different writing spaces. I believe my effectiveness in getting the job done comes from not being deterred or thinking that my voice means any less than anyone else in the room. We are all equally worthwhile – especially if we are all invited into the same space. I try to take up a fair amount of space to help open the doors for others who also look like me. Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself? I straddle the line between writer, creative and speaker – this means that part of my time is quietly writing (I was recently featured in an award-winning Microsoft commercial about my writing career as an introvert: https://youtu.be/ugDwpB12-Fw?si=lCp39EOP89RpHyao ) and I have a wonderful book coming up at the end of 2025 through Public Affairs (Hachette Book Group) on Personal Branding for Introverts (sign up here to learn more: https://www.goldiechan.com/introvertsbrand ). Another part of my time is making videos, designing creative pieces, advising various companies through my agency, Warm Robots ( https://www.warmrobots.com ) on both personal branding for the C-suite and ambassador programs. And finally, my great love is speaking on stage, and I’ve already been lucky enough to do quite of bit of it this year and will also be at VidCon this year and a few other bigger venues, speaking and sharing my journey. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most? Three skills that really helped me during my career journey was flexibility, confidence and less focus on ego. The last two are tied together in that confidence is incredibly important to be able to advocate for yourself in tough situations and less ego means you work hard for those opportunities and don’t assume that you deserve promotions without the hard work. One concept I’m speaking a lot on this year is the “restart” – being able to start again and being flexible when life and career doesn’t automatically go the way you want. If you are early in your career, it’s so helpful to seek out mentorship and folks who are even one more step ahead of you in your career to help move you forward. What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months? My biggest area of growth has been in refinding my confidence in my career. I had to stop working in 2022 when I was diagnosed with cancer and did not start working again til early 2023. I’ve spent the past year and a half re-finding my footing and general direction of where I want to and can do with limited energy. It’s been really amazing to have my friends and colleagues support me through this deeply difficult time as well. I’m truly grateful and excited to speak more and do more good with on projects I care more about in branding and marketing. Visit Website

Still in awe that no matter how large the room gets, her picture is still on a giant video screen behind her and that there are thousands in front of her waiting on her every word. She has spoken all over the world – from hosting intimate Hollywood-related Q&As in sunny Los Angeles where she lives to presenting to thousands of eager listeners on glamorous stages in Romania, London and more. Her engaging, charismatic and warm style of speaking appeals to even the most exhausted and jaded of conference goers and direct feedback has been "compelling speaker that is very easy to listen to." Most recently, Goldie Chan has returned to speaking on familiar and new stages in 2024, from a heartfelt session at Retail Fest in San Diego to energizing workshops at Adobe Summit in Las Vegas, sharing her wisdom on growing brands and developing a strong social presence that gets noticed in a sea of noise. Her success on the stage is not a surprise when she is known for her expertise and is an internationally-recognized Senior Contributor at Forbes for Personal Branding and Storytelling in the Digital Age as well as a LinkedIn Top Voice for Social Media. No career path is a straight line but the creative empath, Huffinton Post's "Oprah of LinkedIn", is not taking a moment for granted. Goldie Chan was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2022 and took off 10 months for the first round of chemotherapy. It was a pause after the pause of the pandemic. At a moment when most were returning to their regular routines, she was deep in a very life-saving treatment. "I never expected to have to restart – to have to stop my life and career completely and start again from scratch because of the worst health news anyone can get. The experience dealing with cancer and treatment deeply moved me and I learned so much about what is really important and necessary to me and what I want to do in the future. I'm glad to say that I'm currently a cancer survivor and my career is slowly returning to a beautiful thriving state as well." By 2023, Goldie Chan had restarted her own career from scratch and had begun to work with brands again, travel and speak on stages. She was learning what her own boundaries and limits were in real time and like a good inspirational speaker, she took those lessons and developed them into a talk that she gave at Adobe MAX to creatives on restarting your life and career. She'll be repeating this talk later this year at VidCon to an entirely new set of creatives who are already clamoring to hear her speak again. It's hard to carve out space in any field and even more difficult when you're not running the race while others are. But with even more perspective, Goldie Chan has carved out a space that few others like Brene Brown, Mel Robbins and Jay Shetty have. She has built a highly dedicated audience by showing true vulnerability, been willing to open up to people and connect beyond a surface level and as she hits the ground running as one of the top ten most sought-after brand evangelists, a partnership with Microsoft, LA Weekly's Breakout Start of 2024, she's stronger and more focused than ever. This is the year everyone knows the name Goldie Chan. But for those that already did, they are excited to see it all coming together. Goldie Chan is the perfect speaker for inspiring others to grow their personal brand, to restart their career, to understand how to humanize their brand in the age of AI. She's hired by a variety of places to do workshops and deeply moving and thoughtful keynotes. These include large corporate brands and startups like LEGO, Taco Bell, Google and Adobe and also highly competitive conferences like VidCon, RetailFest and Traffic & Conversion Summit. Goldie Chan Is Ready (Again) To Be The Breakout Star of 2024 Progress is never linear. It is full of starts and stops and restarts. Last month as Goldie Chan took the stage at Adobe Max, here in Los Angeles, where she has lived for the past seven years, it wasn’t a typical speech at a large conference. The muscle memory was there. As a top global speaker, she has done this for years. But the topic was absolutely new, deeply raw, deeply personal. She was speaking about restarts, something everyone will probably experience in their career, but her journey was abrupt. Her career was skyrocketing and then in 2022, she was diagnosed with cancer. She’s been receiving the best care from USC Keck and has been navigating returning to the workplace while still undergoing chemotherapy and treatment for much of 2023. It’s definitely colored how she thinks and feels about working on what matters and has the most positive impact on others. Goldie Chan was named the Oprah of LinkedIn, as one of its most influential contributors, creators, and influencers. Doors opened immediately. It’s hard to beat that kind of praise but the key to that statement wasn’t the reach, it was the empathy she expressed. That’s why brands work with her and have made her one of the most effective and trusted brand evangelists in the world. Influence, of any sort, is not easily achieved. For every TikTok, IG, Snapchat, any platform star there are tens of thousands that try. Loud, brash, excitable, funny, aggressive extroverts tend to win. Goldie is none of those things. She’s about to be Jay Shetty, only her version, the outlier, the empath, the person who is able to connect through a camera and touch your soul. Her brand of honesty, vulnerability, and relatability resonates. It’s creating an entirely new category of creator that is vulnerable, real, and deeply thoughtful. She already possessed all of these qualities but through struggle, even more vulnerability, relatability, and honesty came through. Last week Microsoft Surface launched a global advertisement with her as the star. It focuses on who she is, her writing, her creativity, her process, and what inspires her. It’s a deep partnership where she also is the lead instructor for all LinkedIn Learning instructors. Goldie moved to LA 7 years ago. She previously spent a year in LA, producing an award-winning web drama, Cost of Capital, then moved back to LA to work on creative projects again and landed at Legendary Entertainment for a bit and then a few tech startups. In 2017, during a work sabbatical, she started to create, edit, and produce videos on LinkedIn. Those videos skyrocketed her presence on the internet and instantly she started working with companies like Adobe, LEGO, Fiverr, and more. She was asked to do things like be an entrepreneurial ambassador for the city of London and Forbes reached out to have her be a lead contributor on “Personal Branding and Storytelling in the Digital Age. “I love the diversity in Los Angeles – both in food and people and some of my favorite places in the world are here – Secret Headquarters is my favorite comic book shop and Republique is my favorite brunch spot. You can’t beat the weather and the sheer creativity and drive of most people that you meet, regardless of what they are working on, is super impressive,” said Chan. Life is unpredictable. But if the last two months are any indicator, you’re going to see a lot of Goldie Chan in 2024 and beyond. And she’s the kind of budding superstar that will never take that for granted.
